Come enjoy a tour of historic Castine, a downeast village whose six centuries of history encompasses stories of Wabanaki, French, Dutch, British, and Americans all of whom coveted and fought over the land and waterways surrounding this coastal village. On your tour, led by Castine Historical Society Executive Director Lisa Simpson Lutts, you will learn about early forts, a major Revolutionary War battle, and how the town developed into one of the most significant seaports on the Maine coast during the 19th century. Along the way you will see historic architectural gems including Federal period homes, a mid-19th century salt shed and sail loft, Victorian era inns, the Maine Maritime Academy campus, and the second oldest post office in the country that once served as the Penobscot District Custom House.
The group will meet in front of the Abbott School at 17 School Street, Castine.
