Walking Tour of Stonington

  • Maine Preservation Main Street Stonington, ME (map)

Come learn about this spectacular village on a tour with Linda Nelson, Economic & Community Development Director for Stonington.

Stonington is Maine’s most productive fishing harbor, home to approximately 300 individually owned and operated lobster boats landing the most lobster of any port in Maine. Stonington is also an authentic, 19th century village with a Main Street of Victorian, mansard-roofed, mixed-use buildings directly along its working waterfront. The downtown has been identified as eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places as a historic district, toward which the Town is working. It is anchored by the 1912 Stonington Opera House, a fully functional, year-round community institution featuring world class professional performances, listed individually on the National Register of Historic Places; a newly Town-purchased and yet-to-be-restored Odd Fellows (IOOF) Hall; and the Deer Isle Granite Museum, featuring a working model that illustrates the area's renowned tri-color granite industry.
